Tuesday was a day of shopping at the Train Station

This fruit that Lyndsy is holding is called the Dragon Fruit.  Did I taste it?  Nope!  Tucker was our adventursome eater.  He is eating some conglomeration that had things like squid and octopus and who knows what in it.  Maren and I about lost our hamburgers just watching him eat it.

The street vendors did not like their picture taken.  Every time I snapped a shot and they realized what I’d done they would yell at me, but I just smiled and kept on walking.  These pictures are typical of the streets of China.  A very interesting thing happened as we were walking down one of the streets, we noticed all kinds of people selling their wares off of tarp like blankets on the sidewalk.  All of a sudden the tarps were grabbed in each corner with the merchandize still in the middle.  We could see this happening all along the side walk and we couldn’t figure out what was going on.  I thought that maybe they knew we were going to get a downpour or something or a pending earthquake.  I couldn’t imagine what could possible make them clear up the items so quickly.  Everywhere we looked down the street, vendors were putting away stuff as fast as you could blink.  As we neared the end of the street we saw the cause.  Apparently all these people selling off the sidewalk do not have a license to sell.  The police come by randomly and if you are caught they confiscate all their stuff and arrest them.  We saw a police wagon who had caught someone unawares and they were taking all his stuff along with him and hauling him off.  Derek said they do this periodically to set an example, but it doesn’t stop the people from continuing to sell from the sidewalks.  It was fascinating.
