A very thoughtful son.

When Neal and I got home from work last night, there on the porch was a package from Kingsburg addressed to Neal.  Because it wasn’t Father’s Day and wasn’t Neal’s birthday, our curiosity was peaked as to why Neal would be getting a package and what would be in it!  Neal was delighted when he opened the package and read the note inside.  Thanks Tucker for being so thoughtful, even down to the Tommy Bahama breath mints!!  (Are you kidding me?)  We laughed and laughed!

P.S.  Dad LOVED the tie!  Great taste and perfect choice.

Today we going in for a consultation with the doctor to see what Neal’s options are and how he wants to move forward with the results from the biopsy.

Easter Sunday Ends on a High Note!

Ron and Judy came by our home about 5:00 p.m.  I fixed us a bite to eat and then we played a few hands of bridge.  As they were getting ready to go home, Judy said she had an Easter gift for me.  We have NEVER exchange gifts at Easter so I was a bit taken back.  Pictured below is the gift:

The saying is:  “Some blessings come soon, some come late and some don’t come until Heaven; but for those who embrace the Gospel of Jesus Christ, they come.”  Jeffrey R. Holland

Well, I cried as I read the quote.  What a perfect thought to have in my heart as I ended this beautiful Easter weekend.  I am reminded of how extremely blessed I have been throughout my life and continue to feel the blessings of Heaven poured down on me each day.  I went to bed last night with a prayer in my heart that I shall always stand firm in the Gospel of Jesus Christ, embracing the gospel and increasing my testimony and commitment as a daughter of God.

Just some thoughts.

I just listened to the Tabernacle Choir doing their Easter Sunday broadcast.  As the choir was singing, there were pictures of the beautiful spring flowers on temple square.  I couldn’t help but reflect that sometimes the long winter becomes a bit weary and we are most anxious to get on with spring.  Eastertime is a time of rebirth.  Eastertime is the sunshine and the showers and the blue sky that for long winter months was often gray and cloud covered.

It is fun to search for signs of spring and finally began to notice the buds forming on the trees, the spring bulbs slowly coming up from their winter bed and to watch the snow on Mount Olympus slowly disappear. To me, spring has finally arrived and I’m excited for the warm weather and the coming summer season.

To me, Eastertime is a refreshing of the soul, a renewal of our love for our Father in Heaven.  It is a remembrance of that early morning centuries ago, when our Savior left the tomb and was resurrected and the angel spoke the words, “He is risen.  He is not here.”

I hope all my posterity takes a moment to reflect on this great miracle and that they go to church for the belief in a risen Christ, for the special meaning that Easter has for hearts that believe.  Easter is a time for rejoicing.  It is the promise and the power and the glory!

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, one my mother’s favorite poets, wrote:

“Twas Easter Sunday.

The full-blossomed trees filled

all the air with fragrance and with joy.”

I am filled with joy this Easter Sunday.  I love the gospel, I know it is true and I rejoice in the resurrection of our Savior, Jesus Christ.

Two traditions: Egg Hunt and Egg Contest

It is interesting as the grandchildren grow older they transition from hunting the eggs to hiding them for the younger ones.  Again this year one more grandchild dropped out from the hunting and moved into the hiding.  Oldest to youngest annual prior to Easter egg hunt picture!  We had to do two lines this year as our cameras couldn’t get everyone in.  It is always fun to watch them (especially the little ones) figure out where their place in line is.

IMG_6007IMG_6010IMG_6011IMG_6012IMG_6015IMG_6016IMG_6017

The end results.  I always chuckle when I go back in the house after the hunt and there in the middle of the floor are all the plastic eggs, opened, emptied of the prized candy and left discarded!

Next comes the Easter egg contest – Taylor won this year.  However, there was some comment about her using finger nail polish on her egg.  So, now I guess finger nail polish has been outlawed.  The rules get longer and longer and the contest more fun each year as the competition rises with the grandchildren as well as the adults.  I failed to get a picture of Taylor with her winning egg.  I’m hoping someone else captured a picture and will send it to me.

It was a very fun day.  Cutlers left along with Hintze’s and the rest of the family stayed and played games until about 9:45.  Lyndsy brought a new game that I can’t think of the name of, but it was very fun and we played it for a couple of hours.

Thanks to all the family who participated and made this such a fun and memorable day!  I have to add here that Tucker texted last night and asked if we were doing the egg contest on Sunday.  I told him that we had already done it and that Taylor won.  He said, “I miss not participating in that contest soooooooo much.  We may have to come next year for it.”  Wouldn’t that be fabulous to have the Tucker Maxfield family here for Easter.  Let’s hope it works out that they can come because we miss them greatly.

Families gatherings are always the best!

There is a lot of preparation that goes into having all the children and grandchildren over for dinner and some traditional activities along with spontaneous ones.  Tables need to be brought in from storage in the garage, chairs need to be brought up from downstairs and then tables need to be covered and place settings arranged.  Of course there is the food preparation, which brings the anxiety of trying to decide what to have that the majority would like and just how much to buy.  As our family grows in number and in size the food doesn’t seem to stretch quite as far as it used to.  This Easter celebration was no different than most of the others.  We had roast beef and ham along with all the usual trimmings.

The day began for me by doing all of the above!  Once I get the food in the oven and the tables arranged and set I can relax a bit.  Lynda Ann called and said that their family was coming in early to see a movie called “The Bears” put out by Disney.  Annie and I love those kind of movie.  I was invited to join them.  They picked me up at 12:00.  It was an excellent movie.

IMG_6020 We got back to the house about 2:00 and began the last minute preparations.  When I walked in Neal was painting our eggs with the help of Mr. Boston.  A cute scene that I didn’t catch soon enough.  However we did get a picture of his painted egg that he was very anxious to show off.

Everyone arrived on time and we were sitting down at the tables at 3 p.m.  All the girls brought fun items to share with everyone.  Abby made Easter baskets our of cupcakes, Annie made another bread creation.  An Easter basket out of bread dough that we filled with hot rolls.  Maren brought some delicious macaroons and Lyndsy made some Easter bunnies for every grandchild.  Everything looked very festive!  Thanks to all of you for sharing your cooking talents.

After dinner came a few moments of relaxing while the kitchen was being cleaned up and then the egg hunt!  Eggs were distributed and hidden out in the yard in preparation for the kids to go find their eggs.  Below, Maren and Greg catching a few rays!  The weather was absolutely perfect.  We spent most of our day out on the patio!

Emmi gets another milestone for BYU

I just got a phone call from a very excited granddaughter!  She informed me that she just found out she was awarded an academic scholarship from BYU for 1/2 tuition for her school year!  Add that to her Art Scholarship and her tuition is now paid for the year.  Way to go Emmi Girl!  We are so proud of you!

Some Memories and Thoughts on Easter

In many ways, Easter is a puzzling kind of holiday.  On the one hand we have the solemn and beautiful biblical story of life triumphing over death in the Resurrection of Christ.  On the other we have pastel Easter bunnies and Technicolor eggs.  As a youngster, I remember trying to reconcile the empty tomb with an egg-laying rabbit and deciding that the only true thing about Easter was that you could never tell what was going to happen.

I remember my mother and Annette and I boiling eggs and then coloring them with permanent dye.  We bought a kit at the grocery store; back then it was pretty simple:  for twenty-nine cents you got six colored tablets and a piece of wire to be bent and used as an egg holder.  Mother poured the boiling water and a tablespoon of vinegar into each of six cups, and I dropped in the tablets and watched the water turn colors – red, blue, yellow, green, orange and purple.  Then, using the wire holder, I dunked a boiled egg into each cup.  After a few minutes, I’d fish out the egg and set it to dry in the cardboard carton.  I’m still not sure why I thought this was so exciting, but I can recall looking at the whole carton of brightly colored eggs, certain that I had accomplished something quite magical.  After the eggs were dyed and tucked away in the fridge, the Easter Bunny, a creature I heard a lot about but never actually saw, showed up in the wee hours of Easter morning, removed the eggs from the refrigerator, and “layed” them all over the house.  It never occurred to me to wonder how a rabbit could even open the huge Kenmore in our kitchen, let alone conceal a dozen eggs!

Easter Sunday not only brought a basket full of candy but a new Easter outfit sometimes including a hat, gloves and always shiny new patent-leather shoes.  A few weeks before Easter, Mother, Annette and I went to Penny’s Store and chose a pattern from the huge Simplicity catalog, then carefully examined the bolts of fabric.  I remember one Easter dress that was pastel in sheer organza and lacy eyelet, supported with a layered petticoat.

We would go to Sunday School where we would always sing, “Christ the Lord Is Risen Today”.  After church we hurried home to put the final touches on the Easter dinner; baked ham, scalloped potatoes, creamed peas and salads.  We always had mother’s home made cherry and apple pies.  Easter dinner always was noisy family members encircling the table.  Conversations swirled around me as my older sisters, brothers, in-laws, nieces and nephews shared stories of past and present.  Often, during dinner the doorbell would ring and there on the front porch would be a hollow chocolate Easter bunny for all of the children.  Never did figure out how the rabbit managed to carry all those chocolate bunnies to our front door and reach high enough to ring the doorbell!

After dinner all of us kids would congregate in my bedroom where, devoid of adult supervision, we perched on the floor or the bed and bit off the hollow ears of our bunnies, stuck them on our fingers as puppets, and made up ridiculous plays about “Rabbit World.”  At the end of the day everyone went home happy that we were a family and full of love and replenished with faith.

And maybe that’s the central truth in the midst of Easter’s paradox:  emptiness becomes full.  Empty homes are filled with loving family members; empty baskets are filled with eggs; the empty tomb bursts with new life.  And in the end the most important thing isn’t to be able to explain it all, but just to understand that hope is discovered in the most unlikely places, and that Easter always surprises us with unexpected joy!

Neal is getting anxious for Spring to arrive.

This Saturday found Neal up early and loading the Jeep with pops to take over to Home Depot for free soil.  He came back with a few plants in the pots along with the soil.  He also bought a bunch of other flowers to be planted and got out the patio furniture.  I hope he isn’t too early.  They say that in Utah gardens and flower beds are not totally safe until after May 12th.  We have been known to get snow the end of April.  But we will be positive and hope that we have a nice long Spring without the unexpected snow storms that sometimes blow in.  Next Saturday is our family Easter gathering with the Easter Egg Hunt, dinner and egg contest.  Let’s hope we have gorgeous weather next weekend just like we are experiencing today.

Getting ready for the East Egg Hunt!  Only 8 grandchildren wanting to participate this year.  The rest are feeling like they are too old.  They would rather hide them out in the yard for the little ones to find.

Making progress!

I forgot to post a picture of this on April 1st but even thought it is April 12th, this will have to do.  Yes, quite a few more stitches have been done but at least it gives you an idea of the progress I’ve made.  If I had a conference weekend every month I could really be making some headway!

Medical issues.

Over the past three months Neal has been having some medical issues.  I finally convinced home to go to the doctor for an exam.  It was determined that he needed to have a cat scan and a biopsy.  Both were arranged around Neal’s teaching schedule (of course).  The cat scan revealed another kidney stone floating around but not giving him problems at this time.  We haven’t heard what the results of the biopsy is.  They were supposed to call us Friday, but we haven’t heard from them yet.  We are hoping that no news is good news!  Below is a picture of Neal just prior to his biopsy.

Cute Desmond and River’s baptism picture.

IMG_0625

Lyndsy dropped by the house the other evening and I couldn’t resist having a picture with this darling little boy in his shirt that says, “Grandma loves me.”  How true that is.  Also, the day that River was baptized, I had a Stake Women’s Conference that I was in charge of and was also speaking.  I couldn’t hang around after the baptism, confirmation and Desmond’s blessing to get some pictures so I asked Lyndsy to send me one of River and James.  River was baptized by his father and confirmed by his grandpa.

Emmi is awarded another scholarship!

Emmi got a call from the BYU Art Department telling her that she was awarded a scholarship.  She was invited to a award evening for her to be acknowledged.  I was invited to go but had a huge leadership meeting that night that I was in charge of and speaking.  Didn’t get to go with her and her mom but this is the scholarship that was awarded to her.  We are sure proud of you Emmi.

184th Annual General Conference

How I love conference and so look forward to it every Spring and October.  To know that we have the opportunity to listen to a living prophet.  What a blessed people we are.  I have to admit that going to church while in your pajamas is an added bonus to any Sunday.  How wonderful to learn and have my testimony strengthened as I listen intently.  I also sat with Neal and watched and listened to the Priesthood Session.  I loved the comment about “If you chase two rabbits at the same time, you’ll never catch either one of them!”  How true that is!

Two things that stuck in my head was:  “You can never force righteousness.  Righteousness is chosen.”  and another comment was:  “Relationships are not genetic, they are based on experience.”  Some GOOD food for thought for our combined family.  That comment took me clear back to a family counseling session we had and the counselor said that we shouldn’t worry about the time we had not had but to develop the time we now had together.

I’m so thankful for Neal, for my family and for all my grandchildren.  I’m grateful that I have the chance each day to continue learning, continue traditions, promoting family gatherings as often as possible and maintaining my faith through by my callings, daily prayers and studying the scriptures (well at least reading them every day).  I love this gospel!

My favorite session was the Saturday morning session.  What was yours?

Tending Desmond

Lyndsy called and said that James had to work unexpectedly and could I watch the two little boys for a couple hours.  Desmond is such a happy baby and the minute you look at him he grins the biggest grin possible with those chubby cheeks.  I just had to take a couple snap shots!  The only time he got really mad at me was when he was hungry and tired and he wanted his Mommy and not Gam with a bottle!

Grayson has his debut!

A voxer message came across the phone informing the family that Grayson’s news caste has been nominated for the school district film festival.  Grayson and Mindy were presenters at the biggest technology conference.  Grayson got to meet the key note speaker and had his picture taken with him.  Dean tweeted the picture out to all 19,000 followers that he has so Grayson’s face has been seen around the world.  Way to go Grayson, you are a celebrity now.  Tucker commented on your red shoes and how awesome they are!  We are proud of you and the great things you are accomplishing in school!  Great jumping picture!

It must be Spring!

Neal and I drove up to the garage and we noticed a drake and a hen resting side by side right by our front porch.  I can assure you that it is nearing the beginning of summer when the ducks start making themselves known in our condo complex.  We never see them all winter and when the weather is about to break into warm summer weather they appear.  Love seeing them.

IMG_0616

They are pretty docile and don’t move unless you scare them or get right up next to them.

Andrew Man–Builder of the Month!

Annie sent me this picture this afternoon of Andrew getting his award from school by being the Builder of the Month.  Way to go Andrew!  The certificate says Builders are perfectly honest.  We are proud of you Andrew Man and Tucker will love seeing that smile.  He doesn’t think you ever smile in pictures.  Glad you are proving him wrong.

A trip to the dentist

Tuesday morning found Neal and I both at the dentist to get our teeth cleaned.  Neal’s apt. was at 8:00 so he came straight from the temple.  My apt. was at 8:15 and so I had a very relaxing morning.  Couldn’t see any point in going to work for a half hour.  Love the extra 30 minutes.  I also love having my teeth cleaned of all the plaque!  They feel so smooth!  Thanks Doug!

IMG_0608

Just relaxing and stitching. My very favorite past time!

Had the phone sitting right beside me and after I had answered it and I went to set it down and took a picture instead.  My favorite thing to do – watching a good movie and stitching!!  Notice the nice pedicure!

IMG_0607

Our typical Spring weather

Looked out the window Saturday morning and low and behold it was snowing.  I tried to capture the snow coming down but didn’t really show how hard it was actually snowing.  The interesting thing about Utah weather is that just Friday we had 65 degree weather and Saturday the temperatures dropped and we are getting snow!  Seriously, I LOVE Utah for many reasons and this is high on the list.  How fun to have wind, rain, sleet, hail, snow and sunshine all in one day!  Come on, is that not fun?  You will notice the snow on the blossoms and also on Pa’s pansy flower beds.
