Lynda Ann and Emmi’s fun service project

These three pictures were sent to me on Wednesday.  Emmi and Lynda Ann went back to the Welfare Grainery to help load and haul grain.  They said they really enjoyed it and Annie said she especially loved driving the big huge clutch trucks.  I told them to send me a picture of her driving the truck.  This one isn’t green but apparently just as big.

Just a thought . . .

On some levels, love is a choice.  I can choose to love someone.  I’ve come to realize that it is up to me.  The great thing about love is there is always more room in the heart and the more you give, the more you have to give.

Welfare project for Lynda Ann and Emmi

Annie sent me some pictures of her and Emmi at a Welfare Project for the church.  She was driving the big huge green truck.  I told her she needed to get a picture of her driving the truck.  Apparently they load the truck with grain and then drive to a weigh station where they weigh the truck and the grain.  Don’t know too many details except that she sent me some pictures and she and Emmi had so much fun they are going back again tomorrow.  The very last picture made me laugh right out loud and I had to share it.  Annie said the picture along with the saying was hanging in the main office.  GREAT MORMON HUMOR!!

Below the Mormon humor!  Isn’t it great!

Sunday at Gertsons

This last Sunday was a busy day but a fun one.  I had to speak, of course!  Seems like I’m speaking somewhere almost every Sunday.  But secretly, I have to admit that I like it and I LOVE my calling!  Lyndsy asked me if I would tend the boys while she and James went to see Wicked.  I had them bring the boys over at noon so that Neal and I could head out to Stansbury to hear Mallory play her flute in Sacrament Meeting.  She did a beautiful job and I was very proud of her and her beautiful talent.

I took some darling pictures of Desmond.  That little grandson is the best little baby I’ve ever seen.  He will go to anyone and loves to be talked to and played with.  He never cried or fussed the whole day.  He was in so many arms and seemed to love all the attention he got – even from Maggie!  Sorry, Lyndsy, Maggie did get to lick Desmond’s ears and feet a few times.  Desmond didn’t seem to care.

IMG_0938

The picture on the left was supposed to be of him sucking on his toes but he stopped when he saw me taking a picture.  He already seems to notice a camera!

IMG_0940IMG_0941

Picture of Maggie chewing and licking River’s ears.  The next picture is of Desmond, just as we were leaving to head home.  He had not been asleep the whole afternoon and finally crashed!

IMG_0942IMG_0943

Is this last picture about the cutest thing you’ve ever seen?!  Oh my gosh this baby is one cute kid!  Just look at those beautiful blue eyes.  He does have my spiritual genes!

More stitchery completed and framed

Neal took two more pieces down to have them framed.  I LOVE that he likes choosing the colors of matting and the frames.  He has such great taste in color and what will best enhance the stitchery.  When I spend hours upon hours working on these projects it makes me feel good that he sees the value and time involved in them, he appreciates my talent and takes the time to have them framed with the best materials and colors available.  I know he doesn’t skimp on the expense and that I so appreciate because I don’t skimp on the craftsmanship.  Thanks Neal.  These are beautiful!  Lyndsy finally got her stitchery announcement for Desmond.  The colors are not as brilliant as they are seeing them in person.  The lighting just wasn’t that good when I took these pictures.

A new garden decoration!

Hey we bought each family one for Christmas!!  Just kidding.  We were at Midge and Jim’s home last night for dinner and we noticed this metal peacock in the garden and we had to take a picture of it.  This monstrosity had to come from Mexico!  Now really, wouldn’t you all love to have this in your yard?

IMG_0932A gorgeous sunset to bring in the evening.  My camera just didn’t do it justice.  The colors were so vibrant and beautiful.  Also got a picture of Neal eating a flower petal!  Yup, a flower.  Something we heard and decided to try.  Must have been true because we are still alive today!  I can’t remember the flower but it is the orange ones at the back of the picture.  Some kind of Lilly, I think.  It actually tasted fairly good.  Sweet tasting.

Jeff H. in the hospital.

We got a call yesterday that Maddy had taken her dad to Alta Ridge ER yesterday afternoon.  He was not feeling well.  Sugar levels out of wack, back hurting and said his left side was numb.  Mindy was in Cedar City and made an immediate trip home.  She was supposed to be presenting at a conference for the next two days but had to cancel her classes.  After some preliminary testing they transported Jeff via ambulance to St. Marks where they are keeping him for observation and pumping liquids and insulin in him.  Mindy indicated that they did an MRI which came back with good results and are now waiting for other lab results before they release him.  Hopefully he will be able to go home tomorrow.  Keep your brother/uncle in your prayers, family.

An official notary again

Today Ashley, Kay and I went to the BCI (Bureau of Crimes Investigation) Headquarters and we all got fingerprinted.  It is nice the way they do it now because they don’t use ink anymore.  It always amazes me that with the millions of people on the earth, not one of us has a finger print like anyone else.  We are all unique!

This is Kay and Ashley taking a ‘selfie’ with my phone!  Love these girls!

Back to the Emergency Room

Sunday morning Neal wasn’t feeling his best.  We had decided to attend an early sacrament meeting as we both wanted to visit two other wards and one of the wards met during our wards sacrament time.  The early meeting began at 9:00 a.m.  Neal was uncomfortable throughout the whole meeting.  We had an hour in between our next meeting so we went home.  Neal decided he wasn’t going to visit the 1st ward and would rest while I was visiting a Relief Society meeting.  I had another hour in between meetings so again I came home to find Neal feeling a little worse.  He was having a lot of cramps and discomfort from the catheter.  I went to the next meeting and he opted to stay home.  Very unusual for Neal to not go to all his meetings so I knew that he was not doing well.  I kept suggesting that I should take him to the ER but he wanted to wait.  About 10:00 o’clock that evening he decided he just couldn’t wait any longer.  The catheter was not working and the discomfort was getting unbearable.

We checked in to the ER and there were so many people in the ER that we had an hour wait.  During that time he was walking trying to ease the pain.  About 11:00 they called us back and as we were going into the ER out the doors came Bishop Anderson and his counselor Jeff Marlor from the Chevy Chase Ward in our stake.  They had been there giving a blessing to one of their ward members.  They turned and followed us back and gave Neal a blessing.  Amazing!  I so believe that they were supposed to be there at that time to give Neal a blessing.  We had not called anyone, so no one knew we were there.  The blessing gave both Neal and I the added encouragement that we needed. These tender mercies just keep happening over and over.  Again, I am so grateful for the Priesthood!

Right after the blessing the doctor came in and took out the catheter and put in a new one and drained all the fluid that Neal had accumulated.  He felt almost immediate relief from the cramping and pain. We were in the ER until about 2:15 a.m.  They took a urine sample for a culture and told us we would get the results in the next day or two.  Neal was to continue taking his antibiotics unless his urologist advised a stronger one.

Neal is still struggling with some cramping and discomfort but nothing like he experienced on Sunday.  I am so grateful for the good medical people who are there when we need them and can give us the help necessary.  So thankful that we are living in this day and age of all the medical advances.

Am I worried about Neal?  Yes, very much so.  Children and grandchildren keep your dad / Pa in your prayers.  We aren’t over the hump yet, so we need your continued faith and prayers.

Interesting facts about the Declaration of Independence

One of the most widely held misconceptions about the Declaration of Independence is that it was signed on July 4, 1776.  In fact, independence was formally declared on July 2, 1776, a date that John Adams believed would be “the most memorable epoch in the history of America.”  On July 4, 1776, Congress approved the final text of the Declaration.  It wasn’t signed until August 2, 1776.

Congress made 86 changes to Jefferson’s draft, including shortening the overall length by more than a fourth.  Jefferson was quite unhappy about some of the edits made to his original draft.

In the summer of 1776, when the Declaration was signed, the population of the nation is estimated to have been about 2.5 million.  today the population of the U.S. is more than 300 million.

On December 23, 1941, just over two weeks after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the signed Declaration, together with the Constitution, was removed from public display and prepared for evacuation out of Washington, D.C.  Under the supervision of armed guards, the founding document was packed in a specially designed container, latched with padlocks, sealed with lead and placed in a larger box.  All told, 150 pounds of protective hear surrounded the parchment.  On December 26 and 27, accompanied by Secret Service agents, it traveled by train to Louisville, Kentucky, where a cavalry troop of the 13th Armored Division escorted it to Fort Knox.  The Declaration was returned to Washington, D.C., in 1944 – the year I was born.

Good and interesting information for all you history buffs!

A busy day today and the fireworks keep on going.

Neal went out to Stansbury to play 18 holes of golf with Jeff and Lynda Ann drove in to Salt Lake to do her monthly shopping at Costco.  She brought all the kids so that they could swim while she did her shopping.  I had a couple errands that I needed to run so we left Emmi in charge of the swimming Hayley and Andrew and off we went.  First to Deseret Book, then to the Wood Connection to get some little people made for my Grandma and Grandpa brag board.  The people who made them have gone out of business and I was scrambling to find someone who still made them. The interesting thing is that about the time Desmond was born and I needed to get one to hang on the board for him, Tucker had called me saying that a friend of his also had one of those boards and was looking to find more little figures.  So I called on for help from Lynda Ann.  I ordered a bunch that I will pick up on the 15th.  I bought the paint and asked Annie if she would be so kind as to paint them.  It will be nice to finally get Desmond on the board with the rest of the grandchildren and be able to send some to Tucker to give to his friend.

IMG_0923

From the Wood Connection (sorry you weren’t with us, Jamie – I know how you love that place) to Costco.  Saturday shopping at Costco is NOT something I would ever choose to do but surprisingly enough we got in and out of there pretty slick.  Annie had a huge load of food in her basket and I added a couple items of my own.  When we got back she rounded up the kids and she headed home for a date with Jeff.  Lyndsy, James and the two boys were in the swimming pool when I got home.  I didn’t go out and sit with them because it was just too hot.  The air conditioning in my Jeep isn’t working so by the time I got home I was near melted.  Lyndsy did come in with Desmond so I got to visit with her for a few minutes and hold that cute little boy.  Tomorrow is Sunday and I’m looking forward to a quiet and peaceful Sunday.

Pictures of the deer seen on the golf course.

IMG_0921IMG_0922

Emmi got two great pictures.  The deer blend right in with the trees and often sleep right in the brush under the pine trees on the golf course.  You have to look for them to see them.  They are such beautiful animals and I’m always excited to see them.  Great pictures Emmi!

God Bless America!!

I love the 4th of July.  This is what I was greeted with first thing this morning.  What a perfect greeting from Mindy.  Thanks Mindy!

It has always been a looked forward to and fun filled day as long back as I remember.  Parades, carnivals, picnics up the canyon and fire works at home and at the park.   However, the routine has changed just a bit.  Instead of going to a parade Neal, Jeff G., Emmi and I go golfing up at Wasatch Golf Course while Lynda Ann and the rest of her crew head to Alpine to gather Hintze side of the family.  She then meets up with us at Lila Mae’s in the early afternoon.

Our golf game was fun.  I only golfed nine holes and Jeff, Neal and Emmi stayed for another nine.  Our first ‘selfy’ of the day!

IMG_0896

We almost always see deer on the golf course and this year was no exception.  However, it was on the back nine that I didn’t play but Emmi got two great pictures and I’ll have to post them later when she sends them to me.  It is a beautiful golf course up in the mountains and is very fun to play.  Thanks Neal, for treating us all to a fun golf game.

The dinner at Lila Mae’s was the usual.  Hamburgers, hot dogs, salads, fruit and all the trimmings.  It was a delicious lunch.  Les barbequed all the meat and there was certainly plenty to eat.  Lynda Ann brought some Rice Krispie squares in red, white and blue and also her red, white and blue pin wheel cookies.  Delicious!

IMG_0878IMG_0879IMG_0880

Of course, we had to take a picture by the flag!    And with Neal, it is always a production!                            IMG_0882IMG_0883

Some fun pictures at Lila Mae’s.

IMG_0892IMG_0893IMG_0895

Then comes the event that all, including most of the adults, look forward to.  Susan always has a bingo game with prizes galore.  This year the prizes where spread out on two tables and early enough that everyone got to scout out what was there and already have in mind the prize they were going to pick!  Susan always has piggy banks with $2.00 worth of nickels in them.  They are usually the first to go.  She makes a rule that you can only take one piggy bank until everyone has one.  I think Andrew ended up with four!  You can see the money is a sought after item!

IMG_0899IMG_0900IMG_0903IMG_0904IMG_0905IMG_0907

Then, of course, comes the horse shoe game!  Neal and Les partnered up against Lynda Ann and I.  They won the first game and Annie and I won the second game.

IMG_0908IMG_0911IMG_0914

By the time we were finished with horse shoes it was time to get all the chairs lined up out on the driveway to watch the fire works from Memorial Hill.  There is always fun stuff going on while we are waiting and candy being passed around to everyone.  Lynda Ann always brings Glow Sticks for all the kids and the adults to play with.  She and Emmi hooked a bunch together and decided to throw them up in the air and see how high they could get them.  Well, Annie gave hers a toss and she threw it right up in the tree!  We figured it might have to stay there forever or until a good wind came and blew it down, but Becky found a long pole and was able to retrieve it.

IMG_0917

The fireworks were spectacular as usual.  We did see that one of the fireworks started a fire on the back side of the hill.  We could see the smoke.  As planned they already have two fire trucks at the top of the hill ready for any such emergency so I’m sure they were able to put it out.  It also started to rain just as we were leaving.  It rained hard and so that was a Heaven sent blessing to help put out the fire.  We got home about midnight, all tired and ready for a good night’s sleep.  Hope everyone had as fun on the 4th as I did!  Thanks again to Lila Mae for hosting this big party every year!  And a special thanks to Susan for the prizes and a fun traditional Bingo Game.  And to Les for always setting up the horse shoe game every year!

Another finished fair entry for this fall.

I saw this at the Stitchery Station and just had to do it.  Who ever wrote this poem had a beautiful insight on adoption and the connection between the biological mother, the adopting mother and the child – loved by both.  The Legacy of an Adopted Child.

July already?

I realized that it is July and I need to post the progress I’ve made on the counted cross I’m working on.  This project is one of those projects that seems to go on forever!  But it will be beautiful when it is done and will be one that I will probably enter in the fair this fall.  I’d like to have this finished by the end of this month but it will depend on how busy I am and how many meetings I have, etc. etc.

Father Quail Standing Guard

We have a county garden at the back of our building that has rows of strawberries, raspberries, and every vegetable you can imagine.  Every morning when I come to work I see the same Quail standing guard at the top of the post.  The closer you get to him the louder he gets.  One morning as I was walking toward him and he was squawking furiously I saw the mother quail and her little ones run across the sidewalk and under the raspberry bushes.  Now I understand his vigilance in guarding that part of the garden.  Every morning I seem to be greeted by the same little family with the father standing guard and warning them of the coming enemy!  I had to take a picture of him.

IMG_0874

I couldn’t help but think how like our own lives this scenario is.  We have our Father In Heaven forever standing guard over us and sending warnings when danger approaches.  Hummm, I should write a talk!  Maybe I will.

Short Bread

This morning one of the guys at work brought in some short bread that he had made.  It was delicious for home made short bread.  The funny thing though, was when he was passing it around he was calling it ‘shortenin’ bread.  Well there is a huge difference between short bread and shortenin’ bread.  Shortenin’ bread is from the deep south and when he said it I totally went back in my childhood and remembered a song that Annette and I used to sing all the time.  I may not have the words exactly right but this is what I remember.  It is obviously a song from the South:

“Three little children, lying in bed

Two was sick an’ the other ‘most dead

Sent for the doctor, the doctor said

Give those children some short’nin’ bread

The Chorus goes:  Mama’s little baby loves short’nin’, short’nin’

Mama’s little baby loves short’nin’bread.

I know there were three or four more verses to the song but I can’t remember them.  I just thought it was funny that he was calling his Short Bread Short’nin’ Bread.  This was his Short Bread.  Doesn’t look anything like Short’nin’ bread that is for sure.
