A Scofield Weekend

First of all.  Neal and I have both been spelling Scofield “Schofield” which apparently is wrong.  there is no “H” in Scofield.  The computer doesn’t like the spelling without the “h” but that is the proper way to spell it.  Ron and Judy have been remodeling their cabin in Scofield and so Neal and I have not been down there for about 3 years.  It has been a slow process for them because Ron has done most of the work along with his brother, Mike.  They would go down when the weather permitted and when time permitted.  The completed gutted the cabin and added a whole new roof and an upstairs.  Now the cabin has a huge kitchen and front room combined, down the hall there are two bedrooms and at the end of the hall there is a bathroom, laundry room and the stairs leading to the upstairs sitting room and bedroom.  It is beautiful and we were so excited to see it for the first time.  We arrived there Thursday evening and had a delicious dinner, played bridge, watched a movie and then off to bed. I am always fascinated with the windmills and had Neal snap a couple shots of them.  These are just as you are heading up Price Canyon.  Pictured below is the kitchen and the front room.

Friday morning we had a delicious breakfast and then headed into Price for hamburgers and to drop Neal and Ron off to golf while Judy and I did some essential shopping for the cabin.  I also had her drive around Price and show me where she grew up.

Food was delicious and you can see that we all had on jackets.  It was off and on rain, wind and a bit chilly.  This is an old outhouse across the street from Judy’s cabin and between two cabins.  We don’t know who the outhouse belongs to but we laughed when we noticed that it was padlocked!!!  Seriously?  You will notice the second picture is our cars covered with a thin coating of snow.  Yes, we woke up to snow on the ground Saturday morning.  In fact when I woke up at 6:45 and looked out the window, it was a blizzard!

We were invited to drive up to Judy’s brothers 2 million dollars cabin that was around the end of the lake.  We got there about 10:00 and he had a delicious breakfast waiting for us.  We took a tour of the cabin, had breakfast and then Judy and I went back to the cabin to clean cupboards (from the remodeling) and put things away while the men headed into Price to play golf.  They weren’t gone long.  It was cold and rainy.  They were only able to golf 4 holes and had to quit because they were so cold.  You know it was cold if Neal gave up a golf game.  We had a roaring fire going when they got back to the cabin.  They helped us finish cleaning and putting things away and then settled in for an evening of bridge and a movie.  The picture below is Judy and I standing under the biggest and tallest minor in the world!

Sunday morning we went to church and then back to the cabin for a salmon dinner, naps and bridge.  Judy’s brother and family came over about 4:00.  It was fun to get acquainted with her brother and his family.  This is a picture of one of the 70’s that was visiting Scofield and closed the meeting with his testimony.  Notice the church is on Church Street.  Also, in the picture you will see a lady with a red shirt on.  That whole row was a group of polygamist.  There were three wives and a husband and some kids.

Judy’s brother, Terry, is an electrician and he brought some light fixtures for the cabin.  So while we were visiting, he and Ron put the lights up.

As they were leaving, Judy wanted a picture of all of them so we went outside and took a picture or two.

Judy’s brother gave us some Apple Beer so, of course we had to have a picture taken of us with the bottle of Apple Beer.  By the way, for those who may not know, there is no alcohol in this drink.  Not sure why the call it beer.  Just wanted to clarify that.  Didn’t want my grandchildren getting all excited! Smile I still haven’t tasted mine yet.

Monday morning we had a delicious breakfast of bacon, eggs, fried potatoes and waffles.  We were stuffed when we finished eating.  We cleaned up the cabin, put everything way, packed up and headed home about 1:00.  We stopped at the outlets in Lehi and did some shopping.and then home.  We had a wonderful long weekend and will be excited to go back again another time.  Judy extended a special invite to Annie and her family.  She remembered that Lynda Ann had been to the cabin a long time ago and wants her to come again and see how nice it is.

A belated Mother’s Day Celebration

Lynda Ann was so sick on Mother’s Day this year that she couldn’t even enjoy the day so she had Neal and I out to her home today to have a late celebration.  Annie taught her lesson in Relief Society and then we went home and had a delicious Turkey dinner and then played a game after.  They gave me the movie TAK3N.  Jeffrey never fails given me some kind of suspense or action packed movie.  He knows I love them.

As I was leaving, Mallory handed me this card

I love this poem about Mothers (author unknown)

I think about my mother when I read it and it brings tears to my eyes.  They are, I miss my mom tears.

“Your mother is always with you.

She’s the whisper of the leaves as you walk down the street

She’s the smell of certain foods you remember, flowers you pick, the fragrance of life itself.

She’s the cool hand on your brow when you’re not feeling well.

She’s your breath in the air on a cold winters day.

She is the sound of the rain that lulls you to sleep, the colors of a rainbow, she is Christmas morning.

Your mother lives inside your laughter.

She’s the place you came from, your first home, and she’s the map you follow with every step you take.

She’s your first love, your first friend, even your first enemy.

But nothing on earth can separate you, not time, not space, not even death.”

Jam time again

The California strawberries and raspberries are already in the stores.  I went to Costco to get a couple things and saw the stacks of just arrived berries.  I didn’t have time to get them right then so I went down after work that day and they were almost all gone.  That was yesterday and tonight since about 5:00 p.m. I have been doing strawberry and raspberry jam.  I just barely finished and am ready for bed.  Some pictures of what a disaster my kitchen is when I’m doing jam.  I even had to wipe up the floor!  Between the raspberries and the strawberries I ended up doing about 54 pints.  Remember how Neal used to smell like chocolate when he came home at night from the factory?  Well, even thought I’ve done a boat load of dishes and had my hands in the water I still feel like I smell like one giant strawberry!

Making progress–slowly but surely

This has been a slow going counted cross stitch.  I feel like I’ve been stitching on it for ever and not getting very far.  When I look at last months posting then I know that I’ve accomplished more than it seems.  For some reason I didn’t think this would take as long as it has.

Mother’s Day

This Mother’s Day was an interesting one and a most unusual one.  It had good moments, sad moments and bewildered moments.  A particular incident leading up to this day left me with a heavy heart that has lingered through this day.  I thought a lot about mother today and I hope that I never hurt my mother deeply.  I hope that I always respected her, talked kindly to her and never left her wondering if I loved her.  A life time is more than a span of time.  It’s memories made, laughter shared, tears dried and moments warmed by love.

I have found that being a step parent is one of the most challenging and hardest tasks I’ve ever undertaken.  I know that some of the Maxfield children are and were accepting right off the get go, and others were very opinionated and judgmental.  The sad thing is that opinionated one feels she can do or say whatever she can get by with.  She can express her feelings or emotions and I’m to accept them.  She can freely express hurt, anger or sadness, but I’m not allowed to have feelings.  I remember years ago when I was in counseling that I was told I had permission to “leave the room” when being verbally abused.  Something I had never considered.  He also told me that I needed to “set my boundaries”.  I’m learning I must do the same thing with certain children.  In the past 25 years I’ve learned that I can be the most kind, compassionate person on earth and it won’t matter in her eyes.  I just can’t take it personally.  It is her problem and not mine.  I don’t have to be what she demands or expects.  I have a right to be respected and have boundaries.

Mother’s Day this year was certainly out of the ordinary.  Jeff and Mindy were in Oregon visiting with Justin and C. J. and Lynda Ann was very sick.  So the only children who came was Lyndsy and her two boys and The Cutlers minus Jaden.  He was at a Bees game.

I did get a box of chocolate covered strawberries from Tucker and Jamie and they were delicious.  I ate two yesterday and have already had one today.  Lyndsy also gave me some face cream and body cream that I absolutely LOVE!  Thanks to all for the gifts and the remembrances.

Because Annie is sick, we are going to celebrate Mother’s Day next week when she is feeling well again.

Maddie sent me this picture from Oregon with a Happy Mother’s Day greeting along with a greeting from Mindy.

The Gertson’s finally finishing their basement!

Emmi sent me some pictures of the beginnings of a new basement.  I know Annie has wanted this almost since the first day they moved in and it has been a long time coming.  Lynda Ann said, and I quote, “It’s amazing what you can do when you have money!”  Amen to that.  Notice the fireplace that has been put in and covered for safety from all the dust of the sheet rock.  The sheetrock was delivered with a crane over their back fence and loaded into the basement by popping out the whole window.  Annie said the bathroom is also being done.  The plumbers and electricians have been there and the bathtub and shower head installed.  You could call this the best Mother’s Day present ever!!
